Five family portfolios. And a team worth building with.
Marc, 43 · Financial analyst · Brussels · DEGIRO + Interactive Brokers
TL;DR
- ▸Manages 5 family investment accounts across 2 brokers with a technical, methodical approach
- ▸Was looking for a tool that would grow with him, not just one to use passively
- ▸Tested real edge cases during onboarding and reported bugs with precision
- ▸Every report was analysed and resolved within hours or days
- ▸Turning point: an automatic ticker update that would have taken hours in Excel
Marc is 43, works as a financial analyst in Brussels, and manages investments for himself and four family members. Five accounts in total, split between DEGIRO and Interactive Brokers, with around 35 instruments across ETFs, bonds, and some equities.
He wasn't looking for the most feature-complete app. He was looking for something that would evolve — and a team he could actually talk to.
What someone who manages multiple portfolios with method is actually looking for
Marc brings the same precision to his investments as he does to his work. Tracking five portfolios across two brokers means keeping on top of security transfers, bond redemptions, dividends, and corporate ticker changes. Standard stuff for anyone managing a family's wealth — but it requires tools that can keep up.
When he found DonkyCapital in early access, he decided to test it properly — not with dummy data, but with the hardest cases he had. His criterion wasn't whether it worked perfectly on day one. It was understanding who he was dealing with.
An onboarding that looked more like an audit
Marc didn't start by importing everything. He picked one portfolio, loaded the operations he knew would be tricky — inter-broker transfers, bond redemptions at maturity, interest transactions — and logged what was handled and what wasn't.
There were issues. Security transfers between DEGIRO and Interactive Brokers were being recognised but not generating the corresponding cash movement. Some bond operations weren't being parsed. Marc compiled everything into a detailed message — real cases, exact error strings, context.
"I wasn't sure I'd get such a quick response," he says. The team analysed the files, fixed the parser, extended support for certain formats. Transfers were resolved first with manual instructions, then made automatic a few weeks later. "It wasn't a closed ticket. It was a conversation."
"I reported bugs for weeks — not to find fault, but to help them build something that worked for cases like mine."
The moment that made everything clear
Three weeks into testing, Marc flagged an anomaly on one position: a Canadian equity had changed ticker — the company had been acquired. The old ISIN was no longer active.
The team pointed him to the replacement ISIN. The position was already correctly tracked in the system. Marc replied with one line: "This is exactly what I'm tired of doing in Excel."
It wasn't just that ticker. It was the realisation of how many times in the future that operation — finding the old code, updating everything, verifying historical calculations were still right — wouldn't fall on him.
How it works today — and what actually changed
Marc completed the import of all five portfolios over three weeks. Not everything was clean: some positions had incomplete history because transfers had been logged incorrectly in previous years. He fixed them once, manually. "In Excel I would have had to fix them every time I exported a report."
What he values most isn't a specific feature. It's the approach: being able to flag something and know it will be looked at. "I'm not using a tool that someone stopped updating. I'm using something that's being built while I use it."
He's also started sharing the dashboard with the family members he manages. Some want to see the details; others just want to know how things are going. "Before I was exporting Excel screenshots. Now I show them the dashboard — and the conversation changes."
Editor's note — Inter-broker security transfers are now handled automatically: the system adds the corresponding cash movement without manual intervention.
"The real value isn't that it works perfectly on day one. It's that someone is working to make it better next month."
What's still open — and why he keeps using it
Marc is equally precise about expectations. Some complex instruments — certain certificates he tracks for a family member — aren't yet supported by the platform. He logs them manually as unlisted assets with periodic price updates. "It's not the ideal solution, but it's manageable. And in the meantime I can see them in the context of the full portfolio."
His investment process has become cleaner. The data is there, it's correct, and he can focus on decisions instead of data collection. "Before, I spent time preparing data. Now I use that time to look at the data."
He said yes when the team asked if he wanted to be involved in the next developments around multi-portfolio import. "For any collaboration or testing, don't hesitate — it's a pleasure for me." Still is.
